Actions for children in the framework of the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF)
In the framework of the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) participates in the Exhibition with its own stand,in order to inform the general public about official statistics. During the exhibition, ELSTAT organises at its stand many recreational and educational activities for children. Children have the opportunity to get an insight into the importance of statistics. These events are part of ELSTAT’s actions aimed at fostering statistical literacy in Greece.
During the 88th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) once again demonstrated its strong commitment to the implementation of its strategy for “Fostering Statistical Literacy in Greece.”
A highlight of ELSTAT’s participation was a series of educational activities aimed at lower and upper secondary school students, with the objective of encouraging young people to use statistical data as a tool for decision-making and understanding their environment.
Visitors to ELSTAT’s stand (Pavilion 15 – Stand 30) had the opportunity to learn about the processes involved in the development, production, and dissemination of Official Statistics by ELSTAT, the ongoing initiatives under the "Fostering Statistical Literacy in Greece" strategy, and the depiction of demographic, social, and economic changes in Greece’s population. These were presented through thematic publications, including the “2021 Population and Housing Census Results” for the four major geographical regions of Greece (Northern Greece, Central Greece - Attica, Aegean Islands - Crete) and “Children Through the 2021 Population and Housing Census.”
The educational events were attended by secondary school students from Thessaloniki and Lefkada. They were informed about the institutional framework and the role of the National Statistical System, as well as about the methodology of ELSTAT’s surveys and the dissemination of their results, using representative examples.
Moreover, through the interactive educational game “Discover Official Statistics,” students were invited to search for answers to specific questions by exploring ELSTAT’s infographics and publications available at the stand of ELSTAT. During this activity, students were divided into groups of 4–5 persons, they were given five cards with a total of nine questions, and began their exploration for official statistical information. The game was received with great enthusiasm by both students and teachers.
The latest (fifth) edition of the educational workbook series 'Numbers and Our Lives' was officially introduced during the event. This edition is a teaching tool designed to enhance students’ understanding of key statistical concepts such as sample surveys, linear correlation, and linear regression. It serves as a valuable resource for the effective teaching of statistics, combining scientific accuracy with an engaging and student-friendly approach.
