World Statistics Day 2025: Quality Statistics and Data for Everyone
World Statistics Day is celebrated every five years, on 20 October, as an international occasion to highlight the contribution of official statistics to society, governance and evidence-based decision-making. It draws attention to the importance of accurate, reliable and comparable data that are essential for understanding the social, economic and environmental changes shaping today’s world
This year’s World Statistics Day, under the theme “Driving Change with Quality Statistics and Data for Everyone”, also marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations and underscores the fundamental role of trustworthy data in advancing global progress. With a focus on quality, trust and innovation, the day serves as a reminder that statistics are a cornerstone of international cooperation and of addressing critical challenges such as peace, sustainable development, climate change and public health.
At the European level, Eurostat and the European Statistical System (ESS) actively participate in this year’s celebration, promoting initiatives that foster the use of data through innovation and new technologies and strengthening citizens’ trust in official statistics.
In Greece, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) marks World Statistics Day through awareness and outreach activities that enhance statistical literacy, while also launching the ninth Panhellenic Statistics Competition.
World Statistics Day 2025 reminds us that data are not merely numbers. They are the means by which we understand reality, evaluate policies and design a fairer, more sustainable and transparent future. Quality, trust and innovation in official statistics form the foundation for meaningful progress — for everyone.
World Statistics Day - Better data. Better lives.
20 October 2015 - World Statistics Day
The celebration of the World Statistics Day was proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations for the first time in 2010 and, since then, the World Statistics Day is celebrated every five years on 20 October to recognise the importance of statistics in the building and functioning of modern societies.
The day is important both for the global statistical community and for simple users of statistics who acknowledge the fundamental role of statistics in the economy, social development and but also democracy itself.
